WHEN SKETCHCLUBS COLLIDE . . .TOO

This time around was special adventure. I went to visit the extrememly talented members of the original Sketchclub (Westside Edition) for lunch and a nice sketching session at their famous retreat. As we left the food depot and wandered into the warm southern California heat of the summertime, our "mark" was pretty much chosen for us. Like a goose wandering the city streets, this little beauty flapped her way across the street . . . and thankfully out of our lives. Just kidding of course. What a great character to remember and scrawl upon some sheets of paper.

Mark and I didnt even have to question it this week, this mailman came strolling by and we knew he was our mark. His head and neck were one form,elongated down into his sloping shoulders,short stout arms and waddling body... I saw him as a ferret, w/his long neck and low shoulders w/stubby arms flailing about.

I have been flying solo for some time now, but this time I produced a memory sketch for myself. Sadly, there will be no others to compare it to, but rest assured . . .he was a good one. I hope all is well with everyone and that all the gentlemen in the Sketch Club EAST division will be getting back together some time soon.

This older gent as a gem as usual. With a new location a bit of intrigue to try something new, the gang deceided on the newly erected Porto's. Without fail, the place was crawling with critters. Upon seeing our "mark" of the week, I initially thought of Rocky Balboa's trainer . . .
"Yer' a bum, ROCK. A bum."

But, I then thought of him as a tired ol' rat. Tired and warn from years of service in the "Men and Mouse" Navel research and development facility. It's here that our "mark" journey'd out to Burbank to soak up some sun away from the base that had such strong glaring waters. Hoping to get a little "R&R" with the chance to see some of those every illusive famous folk, he happened upon this place called Hollywood, Porto's style.

Memory sketch from today, the 17th of April... a rather quick mark since Patty and Chad had to skat... It was his goofy hat, so crookedly placed upon his nogin, along w/his bewildered look as to how this order# thing worked that caught my eye.

I did this in about 10 minutes, just to get it done and move on, work has been a little hectic lately....

The mark from this last monday had several aspects that made him our obvious choice. It was not only his goofball expression during consumption or the ears reminent of the Baggins' reunion party, but his pose. He was straddling the chair ready to push off or gaining balance to roll on his busting belt line, or possibly even prepping himself for a function I would rather not mention.

What a real gem of a character! This guy was hanging about outside the good ol' Costco, watching the bricks grow mold on one of the pilons for a good 30 to 45 minutes. With his blank quarky stare and statuesque pose, there was only one solution . . . turn this guy into a turtle. With no hare to egg him on, this guy was happily content being bolted into the ground and keeping that goofy look on his face.

What a great character!
As a retired 1960's Beatnik, this guys was a sight to see. With the winter season whipping into gear, this gentleman was unfazed. His devotion to a dying breed was significant. As we all huddled against the wall sketching until our hands were numb, Captain Berkinstock was here to make a statement. And that he did.

He was high-stepping his way to hot dog heaven.

My interpretation of our mark. A bird like beak atop this hilarious looking beard, w/no hair on top of his head. A swashbuckling looking character stuck in the wrong era. It was his character that was interesting too, he seemed so aemotional and mundane in his attitude.So much that he would be unwavering in his reactions to such a theft of a certain body part by a long lost cousin.

Today's mark was a wonderful shuffling older woman dressed for the good ol' cold Southern California winter. As she gingerly shifted across the concrete jungle that is Costco, (with an obvious stuggle due to some "special" weight compensation), her husband eagerly awaited . . . .patiently . . . as the minutes ticked by. Our aim was for the wife, but I just had to include the second half. So, here's my recollection of the lady in question, plus one.

And as they say, "Bird's of a feather, flock together."

Well, we all spotted this guy while leaving Costco on Mon Feb 13th.... He was a gorilla of a man who defnitely knew sometiing was up as our group kept staring him down. He protected his vegetarian meal as if it was the last bit of plant life in the hazy jungle.... he seemed tense,afraid we were stalking his lunch for the taking...Poor sap, never even saw this coming....

My Little 1930's Flapper Girl

For this past week's memory sketch we deceiced to do a drawing of the young girl in front of us, but with the theme of a 1920/30's flapper thrown in the mix. With that in mind, it was a prefect way to pay homage with my artist ablitites, to the late great Freddie Moore. I tried to capture the simplicity of that era's designs and do it all in only one sketch just to test myself . . . and I was running out of time. So here she is:

Well, this week we did our mark of a little girl, her hair was a bob cut w/the center pulled up into this cute little ponytail protruding off the top of her head. I just did a quick sketch this go around.... but felt it was still successful. I suggested lets put her into the 1920's era, so added the play dress, the worn boots/shoes and the dark wool socks

WE have decided to try something different here @Sketch Club East...something to differ us from the original Sketch Club on the westside.... We now take our mark and one of the members comes up w/a theme to put our character in.So we use the same character,etc but put them in the designated theme, change costume,etc. Although, we still aim for likeness in the face. It helps our memory and stimulates our imagination @ the same time. This weeks theme was by Kelsey Mann, a maid, nanny,etc.... and here is my sketch

After having a rusty start to a new year, the Sketch Club EAST members did a bit of nice sketches to start the New Year. And as the time drew near to choose our mark for the day, we chose a beauty off the front bow: a muscle man with calves the size of my head and a slight bald patch, (in cargo shorts to say the least), easily guiding the infamous Costco cart one-handed into our memory banks. With a nod and a quick set of hand shakes, we were off to go back to work. THEN with our eyes bulging and with a child's goofy grin, this BEAUTY shuffled out across the grounds. Without a word we all nodded for this guy was our true mark!

Well, here is the memory sketch from our Monday sketch club..... This guy was an obvious mark when I spotted him on the way out....one of our goodfellas mentioned that maybe we should pick a theme this time..like draw our mark as an animal,etc..I jumped @ the chance...so the first sketch is of the unsuspecting in his natural state, and the 2nd is how I see him....due to the prominent bags under his eyes and his unique handlebar mustache I immediately saw him for what he really is... an owl iganmus mexicanus....

After finishing up for the lunch break, Patrick, Chad, and I started walking back to our cars. After a small deliberation, we chose a mark and headed back to the office. But before the first step hit the pavement, this beauty strolled into the sidewalk from a local ribs joint. There was no doubt, he was the real mark.
